Louisiana Fortify Homes Program: Grants for Stronger Roofs

When grant rounds are open, Louisiana homeowners can qualify for state grants of up to $10,000 to upgrade to a FORTIFIED roof — a roof built to a stricter wind standard that can also earn insurance discounts. Rounds open and close throughout the year; here’s how the program works, in plain English.

What Is the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program?

The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program, run by the Louisiana Department of Insurance, awards grants of up to $10,000 to help homeowners replace their roof with one built to the IBHS FORTIFIED Roof™ standard — a nationally recognized construction standard designed to hold up against high wind and driving rain. The state has expanded program funding as demand has grown, and grants are awarded in rounds through a registration lottery.

Current status: grant rounds open and close throughout the year. As of this writing, lottery registration is closed and new rounds will be announced by the Department of Insurance. Check the official program page at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes for the latest — and get your roof inspected now so you’re ready when the next round opens.

Who’s Eligible?

  • The home must be your primary residence with a homestead exemption.
  • You need an active insurance policy with wind coverage (and flood insurance if you’re in a Special Flood Hazard Area).
  • The roof must be replaced in full — the program doesn’t fund partial repairs.
  • The home must be in one of the program’s eligible parishes (25 parishes, including Acadia). Check the current parish list on the state’s site — it can change between rounds.
  • New construction, condos, and mobile homes are excluded.

What Makes a Roof “FORTIFIED”?

A FORTIFIED Roof isn’t a brand of shingle — it’s a stronger way of building the whole roof system:

  • Sealed roof deck — so even if shingles blow off, water stays out of your house.
  • Ring-shank nails — nearly double the wind resistance of standard nails.
  • Stronger edges — wider drip edge and fully adhered starter strips where wind attacks first.
  • Optional impact-resistant shingles for hail protection.

The Insurance Discount

When a FORTIFIED roof is completed and certified by an independent FORTIFIED Evaluator, you receive a certificate valid for five years. Louisiana insurers offer premium discounts for certified FORTIFIED roofs — the amount varies by company. Louisiana has also offered a separate state tax credit for FORTIFIED upgrades; ask your tax professional about what currently applies.

Thinking About a FORTIFIED Roof? Start With an Inspection.

We’ll inspect your roof, document its current condition with photos, and talk through what a FORTIFIED upgrade would involve for your home — so you’re ready to move when the next grant round opens. You handle the application; we make sure you understand exactly what your roof needs.

Program details, funding, and eligibility are set by the Louisiana Department of Insurance and can change between grant rounds. Always verify current requirements at ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes.
